slumdog
wow, so i watched slumdog millionaire for the first time this week. amazing. completely poignant. if you've not seen it i totally recommend it, but be prepared to be moved. it's the emotional, true story of two brothers who grow up in the slums in india and experience all kinds of horrible things. along the way one of the brothers, jamal, falls in love with his childhood friend latika...they get separated through life events and he and spends his whole life trying to find her again. his search culminates with him becoming a contestant on the popular "who wants to be a millionaire" show. she sees him on the show and they finally find each other at the end.
throughout the movie i was impressed by the themes of cruelty and of love. there are several scenes of torture, one in particular where some men blind a boy to make him a "better" beggar as he will be more pitiful and earn more money for them is totally hard to watch. it baffles me how humans can be so evil to each other. and there is a the theme of pursuing love as jamal is searching everywhere for latika. my favorite part of the movie was at the very end where they finally find each other at a train station. he sees the huge scar on her face (inflicted by the knife of her captors) and he kisses her scar...relating to the pain of her experience in the most tender and accepting way. beautiful. totally brought tears to my eyes. definitely see this one!
