buck-u-uppo

In my packaging design class this past semester we got to design wine bottle labels. I chose to create a varietal named Buck-U-Uppo, based on the short story by P.G. Wodehouse in which Mr. Mulliner, a mild-mannered character tries a serum called Buck-U-Uppo and suddenly becomes a bold character with super-human powers. I thought the name Buck-U-Uppo would be a fun play on words as some turn to vino for a pick-me-up when in need of a little courage. The Wodehouse story was set in the 1920s-1930s so I treated the piece with a little Art Deco flair courtesy of the lightening bolts and sans serif typeface.

boddington's

i'm not much of a beer person but i recently tried boddington's ale, mainly because it's british and has great packaging design, and i'm happy to say i was quite impressed. here's a bit of info. about the brew from the company's web site:
"On the corner of Great Ducie Street and New Bridge Street in Strangeways, Manchester, is where two grain merchants, Thomas Caister and Thomas Fry, founded the Strangeways Brewery in 1778. Henry Boddington joined the business in 1832 as a traveler (the local vernacular for repairman) and rose to become a partner. Henry Boddington became the sole owner in 1853. The company was renamed Boddingtons Breweries in 1886 following Henry’s death.
In 1992, Boddingtons introduced the widget can and was one of the first beers to use this technology. When Boddingtons is canned, the combination of the carbon dioxide and nitrogen needed to create the head of the beer is less than ideal. The Draught Flow System inside of the widget can consists of a plastic, nitrogen-filled ball or widget that helps the carbon dioxide already dissolved in the beer form additional tiny bubbles. This keeps the head stable and makes the beer as close to a draught brew as possible.

Boddingtons is imported and distributed in the United States by Anheuser-Busch, Inc."
